Dear Medway Middle School Families,

We are pleased to share that, starting Thursday, January 21, 2021, we will move forward with the full implementation of synchronous (live, scheduled, virtual) learning experiences for all students, grades 6-12, during their at home learning days. We recognize that many of our students have already been participating in aspects of this practice; however, attendance and participation in these synchronous experiences will be expected and required of all students beginning Thursday, January 21, 2021.

This shift represents the culmination of our Synchronous Learning Pilot, which occurred during the late Fall, and our continued commitment to supporting students when they are learning from home. This shift in our instructional practices within our hybrid student learning model also meets the new regulations around structured   learning time recently set by the  Massachusetts Board of Education.

During each class period, educators will be required to plan a minimum of 15 minutes of synchronous learning for each class they teach. When learning from home, students are expected to log-in to each of their classes and participate, with cameras on, for the full synchronous learning experience as directed by the teacher. Types of learning experiences can include: participation in direct teaching, break-out sessions, and other instructional experiences  as designed  by the teacher. It is important that the student reviews their Google Classroom prior to each class to identify what time they are expected to join their class synchronously (beginning, middle, or end). Students must be present for the indicated time/learning  experience to be marked present. Attendance will be taken by the teacher.

Earlier this year, Medway Public Schools published a series of Remote Learning Guidelines to support students, families, and educators navigate this new teaching and learning environment. We ask you to review these guidelines and complete the accompanying form with your child. Please pay particular attention to the student responsibilities outlined below:

Student Responsibilities

  • Identify a “school spot” where you will be able to concentrate, work independently, and access virtual class meetings free of distractions

  • Follow the daily schedule that your teacher(s) have provided

  • Attend the virtual class sessions as scheduled by your teachers (they will be taking attendance)

  • Give your best effort and participate in the class sessions

  • Dress for the online sessions as you would for a typical school day

  • Be patient in your new learning environment

  • Complete and submit all assignments as directed by your teachers

  • Adhere to the Medway Responsible Use Policy, including the online behavior expectations and rules shared by your teachers; all school rules are still in effect

  • Communicate with your teacher and/or an adult at home if you need help

  • Do not save, audio record, video record, take pictures/screenshots, share or post any portion of an online class

We look forward to supporting your child as we offer more opportunities to access synchronous learning from home. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher directly if you have any questions about their plans for teaching synchronously.

Sincerely,

Amanda Luizzi

Principal
